What are spider veins?
Spider veins are blue, red or purple dilated blood vessels (small varicose veins) usually found on the face and legs. They are not considered a medical condition and are strictly a cosmetic concern.
What causes spider veins?
Facial Veins- These are usually a result of long term UVA damage or Rosacea. Leg Veins- Heredity, hormal shift (pregnancy, peri and menapause and birth control). Usually seen after a third pregnancy, weight gain, certain medications and occupations that require standing or sitting for long periods of time.
What are the treatments available for spider veins?
Since spider veins are usually tiny and close to the surface of the skin, laser vein removal is the easiest and fastest way to treat them. For larger buldging " feeder veins" sclerotherapy might be needed. Both procedures are minimally invasive. On your initial consultation Dr. Cappuccino will determine which treatment is best for you.
How does the laser work?
The laser uses a focused beam of light that has a specific target, your vein. The heat from the energy is absorbed by the lining of the blood vessels . The heat causes clotting of the blood and damage to the vessel causing it to close. The body then reabsorbs it over time.
Who are not candidates for the laser treatment?
People with bleeding disorders, diabetes, have a dark tan or are taking photosensitive medications should not have this laser treatment.
What are the side effects of laser?
Its normal for your skin to have a "cat -scratch" appearance which usually disappears in two days. In 20-30% patients can get a hemosiderin stain, a brownish discoloration that can take months to resolve.
What are the post treatment recovery?
It varies from person to person but there is no downtime. We will ask you to wear support stockings for 5-7 days after treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling and help seal the vessel. Avoid activities that cause vasodilation for at least 48hrs which include hot shower/bath, alcohol, and strenuous physical activities.
How many treatments will I need?
It varies, it depends on the size and number of veins and the patients compliance level. On an average of 2-3 for the face and 2-6 for the legs usually spaced four to eight weeks apart.
When do the the veins disappear?
Some veins will disappear instantly during the laser treatment. Fading of the larger vessels occur gradually over a period of months.
What are the long term results?
Although the veins treated will not return, it does not prevent new veins from forming. Most people can expect 80%-90% improvement.
