Question: What is Coolsculpting and does it really work?

Answer: Coolsculpting is an FDA-cleared technology that uses controlled cooling to reduce unwanted fat. The science behind the technology is called cryolipolysis- the concept that cold temperatures can selectively eliminate fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue. Each area to be treated is subjected to temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit for one hour. After all areas have been treated, the patient can immediately resume normal activities. The fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from the body over 6-12 weeks. Multiple sessions can be done to maximize the results. The results are permanent and the eliminated fat cells never return.

As a plastic surgeon I too was skeptical when I first heard about Coolsculpting, but I am happy to say that we have had outstanding results after almost 2 years using the technique. Coolsculpting has largely replaced traditional liposuction in my practice, offering the same benefits without the invasive nature of liposuction, requirement for anesthesia, or the downtime.

Question: Will Coolsculpting help me lose weight?

Answer: Coolsculpting is not a weight reduction strategy, but rather a fat reduction process that is ideally suited for reducing stubborn areas of excess fat. It is important to understand the difference between weight loss and fat reduction. After adolescence we have a constant number of fat cells in our body that grow when we gain weight and shrink when we lose weight. Fat reduction techniques like Coolsculpting and liposuction permanently remove selected fat cells, shrinking targeted areas of the body.

Question: Am I a good candidate?

Answer: The best candidates are men and women who are near ideal body weight but have stubborn fat deposits. For example, someone who is in good shape but has love handles that won’t go away despite exercise is a good candidate for Coolsculpting. Typically treated areas are the abdomen, hips, flanks, upper back, arms, and thighs. The best way to know if you are a good candidate is to visit Shelly our Coolsculpting specialist at our office for a free consultation and estimate. Shelly will evaluate you and provide you a realistic expected outcome following treatment. She can be reached by phone at our Main St. office (301) 829-4110 or email [email protected]
